MLS NEXT Flex 2026 is set, and the draw is already deciding who survives. We break down the hardest groups, safest paths, and which contenders face the toughest three-game road to MLS NEXT Cup.

MLS NEXT Flex 2026: The Hardest Roads to Salt Lake

MLS NEXT Flex 2026: The Hardest Roads to Salt Lake

MLS NEXT Flex is where the season tightens into three games.

From April 23–28, 2026, every team plays three group matches in a four-team round robin, and only one team per group advances to MLS NEXT Cup in Salt Lake.

That’s it. No margin for error. No second chances.

Because of that, the draw matters as much as the team. Some contenders landed in groups where they can control the week. Others are already in survival mode before kickoff.

To break down the field clearly, we’re using two simple metrics:

  • Avg Ranking: the average rank of all four teams in the group. Lower = tougher group
  • Favorite %: projected chance the top team wins the group

If a favorite is sitting around 35%–42%, that’s not control. That’s a fight.

Quick Hits

  • The two toughest groups in the entire field are both in U15: Group H and Group I
  • The safest path belongs to FC DELCO U16 (52.8%)
  • The most volatile elite group is U17 Group E, where the favorite is under 35%
  • U19 Group E is the most balanced grinder, while Group A is the toughest draw for a top contender
  • Barca Residency Academy and FC DELCO are best positioned across all age groups

The Hardest Groups

U15: Group H is the true group of death

  • Avg Ranking: 22.0
  • Top-25 teams: 3
  • Favorite: Cedar Stars Academy Bergen (41.5%)
  • Teams: #1 Cedar Stars, #20 FC Golden State, #23 Carolina Core, #44 Atletico Santa Rosa

This is the clearest nightmare draw in Flex. The No. 1 team in the age group didn’t just draw one challenger, they drew two top-25 teams.

And the number says everything. 41.5% is extremely low for a No. 1 seed. This group is wide open.

Right behind it:

GroupAvg RankingTop-25 TeamsFavorite
Group H22.03Cedar Stars 41.5%
Group I23.33FC DELCO 40.6%

Group I might be even more brutal for a favorite. DELCO (#2) has to deal with Weston (#11) and Chattanooga (#17). There’s no protection here.

U16: Group L has no breathing room

  • Avg Ranking: 27.5
  • Top-25 teams: 1
  • Favorite: Wake FC (34.8%)
  • Teams: #5 Wake FC, #31 Beachside, #35 Seattle, #39 Weston

This is a different kind of hard group.

There’s only one top-25 team, but every opponent is good enough to drag the group deep into the final day. That’s why Wake sits below 35% despite being the clear top team.

This is the classic Flex trap: no easy points anywhere.

U17: Group E is the best group in the event

  • Avg Ranking: 22.0
  • Top-25 teams: 2
  • Favorite: Barca Residency Academy (34.9%)
  • Teams: #2 Barca, #11 Seattle, #29 IMG, #46 BW Gottschee

This is the highest-quality group in Flex.

Barca is one of the best teams in the tournament, but they’re still under 35% to win the group. That tells you everything.

Seattle is strong enough to push them immediately, and IMG makes sure this group never settles.

Another major contender section:

GroupAvg RankingTop-25 TeamsFavorite
Group E22.02Barca 34.9%
Group J30.03Bethesda 35.2%

Group J is just as dangerous in a different way. Bethesda (#6), Toronto (#18), and Capital City (#25) create a real three-team fight.

U19: Group E is the balanced grinder

  • Avg Ranking: 30.5
  • Top-25 teams: 2
  • Favorite: Charlotte FC (35.0%)
  • Teams: #7 Charlotte, #23 SLSG, #43 Athletum, #49 Met Oval

This group doesn’t have the biggest name, but it might be the most balanced.

Charlotte is the favorite, but barely. A 35.0% number means this group is likely decided late.

The bigger headline draw is Group A, where Orlando City (#2) sits at just 42.8% after drawing Ventura (#12) and Indy Eleven (#18). That’s a tough road for a title-level team.

The Cleanest Paths

Some contenders avoided the chaos.

TeamWhy the path is cleanerOdds
FC DELCO U16No other top-50 team in group52.8%
NY Red Bulls U19Avoided any top-25 opponent51.0%
Barca Residency U19No elite-level challenger46.4%
Barca Residency U15Entire group outside top 4048.8%

These aren’t guarantees. In a three-game format, nothing is.

But these are the groups where the favorite can control the pace instead of reacting.

Favorites Under Pressure

This is where Flex gets real. Some of the best teams don’t have safe paths.

  • Cedar Stars U15 (#1): 41.5%
  • FC DELCO U15 (#2): 40.6%
  • Bethesda U17 (#6): 35.2%
  • Barca U17 (#2): 34.9%
  • Orlando City U19 (#2): 42.8%

If your favorite is near 35%, they’re not in control of the group.

Clubs Carrying the Most Weight

Two clubs stand out across all age groups.

Barca Residency Academy

  • U15 #7
  • U16 #8
  • U17 #2
  • U19 #4

FC DELCO

  • U15 #2
  • U16 #3
  • U17 #15
  • U19 #5

Both have multiple teams capable of making real runs.

Other clubs to watch:

  • ALBION SC San Diego
  • Strikers FC
  • Miami Futbol Academy Rush

These are the programs that could stay visible all week.

Matches That Matter Most

Early matches

  • U16 Barca vs Inter Atlanta → early contender check
  • U15 TSF vs Total Futbol Academy → evenly matched battle
  • U17 DELCO vs Strikers → high-impact group game
  • U19 Indy Eleven vs Ventura → major group leverage

Final day (Tuesday)

  • U17 Union vs Cedar Stars → likely group decider
  • U15 Athletum vs Strikers → high-stakes finish
  • U15 City SC vs TFA → another top-end clash
  • U17 Seattle vs Barca → potential statement game

These are the matches that will decide groups, not just headline them.

Why the Groups Decide Everything

Flex doesn’t wait for knockout rounds to matter.

The pressure is already in the groups:

  • U15 is the deepest field
  • U17 Group E is the most volatile elite section
  • DELCO U16 has the clearest path
  • Multiple top teams are sitting in uncomfortable positions

Three games. One spot.

At Flex, the road matters just as much as the team taking it.
