MLS NEXT Cup Recap: A Tournament That Delivered

MLS NEXT Cup Recap: A Tournament That Delivered

MLS NEXT Cup is built to test everything.

It tests rankings. It tests player quality. It tests team depth, defensive structure, bracket toughness, and the ability to survive one-game pressure.

This year’s tournament did exactly that.

Some of the teams expected to make deep runs finished the job. Cedar Stars Academy Bergen, Total Futbol Academy, Orlando City Youth SC, and Orlando City SC all backed up strong pre-tournament profiles.

But the event also gave us what makes Cup play different from rankings: penalty shootouts, surprise runs, chaotic brackets, and teams getting hot at the perfect time.

That mix is what made this year’s MLS NEXT Cup feel like one of the biggest events of the MLS NEXT season.

The Big Picture

This tournament did not give us one kind of champion.

It gave us several.

Cedar Stars Academy Bergen looked like the most complete team in the event.

Total Futbol Academy were the team that backed up the data.

Orlando City Youth SC were the clutch penalty-shootout team.

Columbus Crew survived the biggest U19 moments.

Tampa Bay United were the most dominant Premier bracket winner.

Atlanta United U13 showed how much composure matters in youth knockout soccer.

That is what made the event so interesting. It confirmed some of the pre-tournament numbers, but it also reminded everyone that knockout soccer has its own logic.

One game can change everything.

Champions

U13 Championship: Atlanta United

Atlanta United won the U13 Championship in dramatic fashion, beating LA Galaxy on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final.

Their path was not easy. They scored five goals in the opener, handled Strikers FC in the Round of 16, then survived two penalty shootouts on the way to the title.

Round of 16Atlanta United 2-0 Strikers FC
QuarterfinalAtlanta United advanced on penalties vs Real Futbol Academy
SemifinalAtlanta United 2-1 Inter Miami CF
FinalAtlanta United advanced on penalties vs LA Galaxy

Atlanta were not just talented. They were composed.

Two penalty wins in one bracket says a lot about their tournament mentality.

U13 Premier: Indy Eleven

Indy Eleven won the U13 Premier bracket, beating Chula Vista FC 2-1 in the final.

They had to survive two penalty shootouts before getting there, including a wild 3-3 match against Southern Soccer Academy.

RoundResult
OpenerIndy Eleven 3-1 FC Golden State
Round of 16Indy Eleven advanced on penalties vs Southern Soccer Academy
QuarterfinalIndy Eleven 3-1 RSL Arizona
SemifinalIndy Eleven advanced on penalties vs Charlotte Independence
FinalIndy Eleven 2-1 Chula Vista FC

Chula Vista FC deserve credit too. They made a strong Premier run and were one of the better under-the-radar teams in the U13 field.

U14 Championship: Orlando City SC

Orlando City SC had one of the cleanest title runs of the event.

They went 5-0-0, scored 12 goals, conceded only 3, and beat Inter Miami CF 3-2 in the final.

RoundResult
OpenerOrlando City SC 3-1 Michigan Jaguars
Round of 16Orlando City SC 2-0 FC Dallas
QuarterfinalOrlando City SC 1-0 San Jose Earthquakes
SemifinalOrlando City SC 3-0 FC Cincinnati
FinalOrlando City SC 3-2 Inter Miami CF

Orlando City were one of the most balanced champions in the field.

They had enough attacking quality to score in every type of game, enough defensive structure to control opponents, and enough toughness to win a close final.

U14 Premier: Tampa Bay United

Tampa Bay United dominated the U14 Premier bracket.

Premier was the second 32-team group, so it should not be framed the same way as winning the Championship bracket. But within their bracket, Tampa Bay were excellent.

They went 5-0-0, scored 16 goals, and beat IMG 2-1 in the final.

Hudson Bancroft also led the whole tournament data with 11 G+A.

RoundResult
OpenerTampa Bay United 4-1 Woodside Soccer Club Crush
Round of 16Tampa Bay United 3-1 Phoenix Rising FC
QuarterfinalTampa Bay United 4-1 Ironbound SC
SemifinalTampa Bay United 3-1 TSF Academy
FinalTampa Bay United 2-1 IMG

This was not a “shock winner” story.

This was a team taking care of its bracket from start to finish.

U15 Homegrown: Cedar Stars Academy Bergen

Cedar Stars Academy Bergen were probably the best overall team at MLS NEXT Cup.

They went 5-0-0, scored 14 goals, conceded only 2, and won the final 1-0 over City SC San Diego.

RoundResult
OpenerCedar Stars Academy Bergen 3-1 Total Futbol Academy
Round of 16Cedar Stars Academy Bergen 6-1 Orlando City Soccer School South
QuarterfinalCedar Stars Academy Bergen 3-0 RSL Arizona
SemifinalCedar Stars Academy Bergen 1-0 Houston Rangers
FinalCedar Stars Academy Bergen 1-0 City SC San Diego

That is the profile of a true Cup champion.

They had blowout wins early, clean sheets late, and two straight 1-0 wins when the bracket got tight.

Cedar Stars were not just winning games. They were winning in different ways.

U16 Homegrown: Total Futbol Academy

Total Futbol Academy entered as one of the strongest U16 teams and finished the job.

They won one of the best finals of the event, beating Barca Residency Academy 4-3.

Daniel Carmona led the team with 7 G+A.

RoundResult
OpenerTotal Futbol Academy 3-1 Chicago FC United
Round of 16Total Futbol Academy 3-2 Colorado Rapids
QuarterfinalTotal Futbol Academy advanced on penalties vs Miami Futbol Academy Rush
SemifinalTotal Futbol Academy 2-0 Philadelphia Union
FinalTotal Futbol Academy 4-3 Barca Residency Academy

This was one of the cleanest “the data was right” outcomes of the tournament.

Total Futbol Academy had the profile before the event and the results after it.

U17 Homegrown: Orlando City Youth SC

Orlando City Youth SC had the most dramatic title run of the tournament.

They were excellent early, then survived the two biggest pressure moments of the bracket: a semifinal penalty shootout against LA Galaxy and a final penalty shootout against Atlanta United.

RoundResult
OpenerOrlando City Youth SC 3-0 Real Futbol Academy
Round of 16Orlando City Youth SC 4-1 Capital City SC
QuarterfinalOrlando City Youth SC 4-1 St. Louis CITY SC
SemifinalOrlando City Youth SC advanced on penalties vs LA Galaxy
FinalOrlando City Youth SC advanced on penalties vs Atlanta United

They scored 14 goals, conceded 5, and showed the kind of composure that wins knockout tournaments.

In a bracket where the rankings broke open, Orlando City Youth SC handled the chaos better than anyone.

U19 Homegrown: Columbus Crew

Columbus Crew won U19 Homegrown after back-to-back penalty shootout wins.

They started with two big wins, beat Real Salt Lake in the quarterfinal, then survived Barca Residency Academy and St. Louis CITY SC from the spot.

RoundResult
OpenerColumbus Crew 4-1 Queen City Mutiny FC
Round of 16Columbus Crew 4-0 Metropolitan Oval
QuarterfinalColumbus Crew 3-1 Real Salt Lake
SemifinalColumbus Crew advanced on penalties vs Barca Residency Academy
FinalColumbus Crew advanced on penalties vs St. Louis CITY SC

This was not the obvious pre-tournament storyline.

But Columbus handled the biggest moments better than anyone in the U19 bracket.

Top Attacking Performers

Hudson Bancroft was the top attacking player in the event data, finishing with 11 G+A for Tampa Bay United.

A few names from the preview showed up here.

Jadon Geer was one of the top U15 players to watch and finished near the top of the event leaderboard.

Daniel Carmona was the top U16 name to watch and led the U16 champion in production.

Top Goalkeepers

These are the clean-sheet leaders from the recorded goalkeeper data.

Clean sheets matter even more in Cup play.

The margins get smaller late in the tournament, and the teams that can control games defensively usually give themselves the best chance to survive.

What We Got Right

Cedar Stars Academy Bergen were correctly identified as a serious U15 title threat, and they ended up looking like the most complete team in the whole event.

Total Futbol Academy had one of the clearest U16 title profiles before the tournament, and they won the bracket.

Orlando City Youth SC were in the U17 favorite group, and they proved why. They had the attacking quality early and the penalty composure late.

Orlando City SC were listed as a major U14 contender, and they won the Championship bracket while allowing only three goals.

The preview did not get everything right, but it pointed to several of the teams that mattered most once the tournament reached its biggest games.

What Surprised Us

LA Galaxy U17

LA Galaxy U17 were one of the biggest stories of the event.

They beat FC DELCO, beat TSF Academy, and pushed Orlando City Youth SC to penalties in the semifinal.

That was a real run from a team that entered well outside the top tier of the rankings.

Inter Miami CF U17

Inter Miami CF had one of the loudest individual results of the tournament: a 5-1 win over Global Football Innovation Academy.

That was not just an upset.

It was a statement result.

Chula Vista FC U13

Chula Vista FC reached the U13 Premier final and finished with one of the strongest records in the age group.

They deserve more attention coming out of the event.

FC Cincinnati U19

FC Cincinnati beat FC DELCO 3-2 and finished better than expected in a deep U19 field.

In a bracket where several bigger names struggled to separate, Cincinnati put together a strong tournament.

Where The Rankings Missed

Some highly rated teams did not match their pre-tournament profile.

TeamAgeRecordPower Rank
Atlanta UnitedU140-1-25
ALBION SC Los AngelesU161-0-22
FC DELCOU160-1-24
Orlando City SCU170-0-37
Players Development AcademyU191-1-13
FC DELCOU191-0-14
Orlando City SCU191-1-15

That does not automatically mean the rankings were wrong.

It means the Cup is a different test.

A team can have a strong season profile and still run into a bad matchup, a bad day, or a penalty shootout that flips the bracket.

That is what makes this tournament valuable. It does not just repeat the rankings. It stress-tests them.

Final Takeaway

MLS NEXT Cup did what the best tournaments do.

It confirmed some of what we thought, and it challenged the rest.

Cedar Stars Academy Bergen were the most complete champion.

Tampa Bay United were the most dominant Premier winner.

Orlando City Youth SC and Columbus Crew showed the most penalty-shootout toughness.

Hudson Bancroft was the top attacking performer.

And U17 was the bracket where the tournament most clearly broke away from the rankings.

The preview gave us the right teams to watch.

The Cup gave us the final proof.
